Let us do something for our village instead of waiting for the village to do something for us!

22/03/2011
Mrs Beatrice Pusculita, a housewife from Glina village, decided to no longer stay aside when it comes to her village. She, along with others locals, initiated an activity for the benefit of the entire community, to bring a change for the better for all community members.

Armed with pencils and notebooks, they called from door to door, to find out the villagers’ opinion about the community problems. It came out that many of them are deeply affected by the effects of leaving garbage in inadequate places. The reasons for such behavior are various: from habit, lack of environment education and unawareness of health danger, to the inaccessibility to secondary roads for sanitation cars and absence of fines.

Beatrice was supported, step by step, by PACT Foundation, an NGO that aims to increase the capacity of people in rural areas to take on the responsibility for a better life for themselves and their communities, without waiting the support of the authorities, but by voluntary involving with their own resources and ideas to improve the living conditions in the community.

"I thought of such an action (with the participation of villagers), inspired by some foreign films. I would have liked that the idea of community to be better developed in our country. Residents can do something for their town, not just wait for the authorities to do so. I like to say something < Let us do something for our village instead waiting for the village to do something for us!>", says Beatrice.

Thus, Beatrice and the other four volunteers, who formed the community group "Us for us," thought to start with a field located at the end of Lacului and Helesteu Streets, which could be used as a place of entertainment for locals, if not destroyed by the piles of garbage. They want to mobilize 60 people in the area, to volunteer to clean the field and arrange a recreational area, to educate people, involving also pupils, in keeping the place clean. But they need shovels, gloves, bags, loading machines, benches, chalk, paint, flowers, trees etc. The City Hall provides three tractors with trailers, but the rest of materials should be provided by themselves.

An urge to support the Romanian villages

PACT Foundation launched a fundraising campaign, to support people like Beatrice and others with similar initiatives, from rural areas of southern Romania, to implement their ambitious efforts for the common good.

"I want each of my fellow citizens to understand that they can do something for their village, without waiting for the things to fall straight out of the sky (Let the mayor do that!). Let each of us consider what we can fix, instead of destroying", urges Beatrice.

Everyone who cares about the state of the Romanian village is invited to make a contribution to the PACT Foundation's donations account (RO24 BPOS 7060 6197 144R ON0P open on BANCPOST Bank, Universitate branch) or online on www.fundatiapact.ro page, where you can learn further details about the Foundation`s work. By funding successful community projects, special people who want to make a change for the better for their peers are encouraged and supported in their approach.
